Preparing Your Horse for Winter: Which Supplements Does It Need?

Winter brings unique challenges for horses. increased vitamin needs, joint stiffness from cold, and stress from box rest. Here is how to prepare with the right supplements.

As temperatures drop and daylight shortens, your horse's body faces a different set of demands. Cold weather affects joints, immune function, coat quality and mental state. Smart supplementation during the winter months can make a real difference in how your horse feels and performs.

Increased vitamin and mineral needs

In winter, most horses have limited or no pasture access. This means less fresh grass. the primary source of vitamins A, E and omega-3 fatty acids. Hay, while essential for fibre, loses vitamin content over time. A daily multivitamin like Tonic fills these gaps, providing calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, selenium, zinc and B vitamins in correct proportions for a 500kg horse.

Joint stiffness in cold weather

Cold temperatures reduce blood flow to extremities and increase synovial fluid viscosity. meaning joints feel stiffer, especially during the first minutes of exercise. Horses with existing joint issues often show noticeably worse symptoms in winter. This is when a joint supplement like Artico Gold earns its value. The hyaluronic acid supports synovial fluid quality, while glucosamine and chondroitin maintain cartilage during the higher-stress cold months.

Practical tip: always allow a longer warm-up in winter. Walk for at least 10-15 minutes before any trot or canter work.

Stress and box rest

Many horses spend significantly more time stabled during winter. Reduced turnout, less social contact, and boredom all contribute to stress. Signs include weaving, cribbing, irritability, and increased spookiness under saddle. If your horse becomes more tense or reactive in winter, magnesium supplementation with ZEN can help by supporting the nervous system's natural calming mechanisms.

Immune support

Winter is peak season for respiratory infections and mud fever. A strong immune system depends on adequate nutrition. Vitamin E and selenium are particularly important for immune function. both are included in Tonic's daily formula. Ensure your horse has consistent access to clean, unfrozen water (dehydration in winter is more common than people think).

A practical winter supplement plan

For most sport horses, an effective winter protocol combines three elements: a daily multivitamin (Tonic) for baseline nutrition, a joint supplement (Artico Gold) for stiffness and cartilage support, and if needed, a calming supplement (ZEN) for stress management. Start this protocol before the coldest months. October or November in Belgium. so your horse enters winter with full nutrient stores.

Bottom line

Winter does not have to mean a decline in your horse's condition. With the right supplementation started early enough, you can maintain joint comfort, support the immune system, and help your horse stay calm and healthy through the dark months.
